Cold Springs - Oregon Wild Horse Collection

and

one from Stinking Water - Oregon

In this particular collection, the connection runs deep as I set out to photograph the birthplace of my beloved Mustang, Liberty, in Cold Springs, Oregon. From the moment Liberty became a part of my life, the desire to visit and document her origins in Cold Springs had been a cherished dream.

Immersing myself in the rugged landscapes of the Cold Springs Herd Management Area felt like stepping into a different world—a world where wild horses roam freely, each carrying a story of resilience and untamed spirit.

Through hours of observation and photography, I endeavored to encapsulate the raw beauty and untamed grace of Liberty's heritage. Every image in this collection is a testament to the raw beauty of the Cold Springs HMA and the awe-inspiring presence of its wild horses.

Paragon

In the heart of the Cold Springs herd, this steel-gray dappled stallion is a true paragon among the grays that roam this HMA.

Historically, the Cold Springs horses have been known for the prevalence of grays in their herd. Among them, this steel-gray stallion is a living testament to the exquisite beauty that can be found in the natural world. His presence is a reminder of the importance of preserving not just the physical form of these magnificent creatures, but also the spirit and legacy that they carry within them.

Sage Brush Trail

In this moment, nature reigns supreme, untouched by the hustle and bustle of modern life. The scent of sagebrush perfumes the air, mingling with the earthy aroma of the desert floor. Each step taken along the trail is a step back in time, a journey into a simpler existence where the only sounds are the call of the wild and the rhythm of hoofbeats on the sandy soil. It is here, in this unspoiled oasis, that we find solace and connection to the land.

Joy

As the gentle breeze moved the blades of green spring grass, a foal stood, his gaze was fixed on the retreating figure of its mother. For a fleeting moment, the foal remained still, a picture of purity and grace amidst the vast expanse of the wild landscape.

Suddenly, a spark of energy ignited, and with a joyful leap, it bounded after its mother. Each step brought a sense of newfound freedom and exuberance, a testament to the boundless spirit of youth.

In that brief encounter, nature unveiled its poetry—the tender bond between parent and offspring, the cycle of life and renewal. The foal's playful pursuit echoed through the tranquil air, a melody of resilience and hope encapsulated in a single, fleeting moment in the wild.

Experiencing a location enveloped in the sights, sounds, and scents of where the wild horses roam, as Mother Nature gently tucks the world to rest, is truly awe-inspiring. Words seem inadequate to capture the profound beauty and emotion that arise from capturing images in the very landscape where my Mustang once roamed.

Cold Springs Grays

Two heavily pregnant mares, their attentive gazes fixed on the lively spectacle of young bachelor stallions engaging in playful sparring nearby.

I decided to invest in some professional mustang photography and this beauty arrived today (Sunrise Pink). I picked this photograph because I have been able to personally see this stallion on a few occasions in the wild, while visiting the Onaqui herd. Jessica Farren/4005 Images was fantastic to work with – quite a feat picking the right image that would be clear and crisp, considering the size of the image (40x60), and she was helpful and willing to pull different images while I was in the decision making process. I love it so much!

Play

This pair of energetic young bachelor stallions entertained me with their playful and mischievous shenanigans.

Arrival

This mare with her long mane full of wind knots heralded the arrival of the rest of the Cold Springs herd.

Blue Sky Morning

This was the first year I went to Cold Springs. I arrived on the HMA on a cool, blue-skyed morning to see the horses in the distance. I hid in the sagebrush, anticipating their approach. Finally, they drew near, and amongst them, the sight of this gray stallion took my breath away. Ever since that moment, each visit back to the HMA has been a chance to glimpse this magnificent stallion through my camera lens. He remains one of my favorite subjects to photograph, a consistent source of inspiration and admiration.

Family Tree

Wild Mustangs in Cold SPrings Oregon, photographed by Jessica Farren Photography

There was something undeniably familiar when I first laid eyes on this band. Amidst a group of bays and sorrels, this gray stallion with a distinctive white blaze immediately captured my attention. The resemblance to my own mare was uncanny, leading me to speculate that they might just share a branch in the family tree.

Wild Country

Two stallions engage in playful sparring amidst the sagebrush, capturing the essence of the Cold Springs HMA during spring. The vibrant scene showcases a mix of green grass, delicate flowers, and rugged sagebrush, painting a picture of transient beauty. However, as spring gives way to summer, the landscape undergoes a transformation, evolving into the arid high desert characteristic of the region.

Dapples

Walking through soft pink wildflowers, this Cold Springs stallion moved with grace, his steel gray coat adorned with dapples. Among this herd of wild horses, this stallion stands out as a true beauty.

Harmony

As the light begins to soften in the sage brush hills, the close-knit band of Cold Springs horses engage in grooming each other under the gentle hue of the late afternoon light. This act of mutual grooming not only serves as a bonding ritual but also plays a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining the intricate social hierarchies within the herd. Through this intimate grooming session, the horses reinforce their relationships, building a foundation of trust and cooperation that is essential for their harmonious coexistence.

Waves Of Color

Sitting in the cab of a truck, peering through binoculars in search of wild horses, my gaze swept across the landscape. Gradually, the forms of horses emerged against the backdrop of a hillside adorned with sagebrush and juniper trees. A distant neigh resonated through the air, prompting a ripple of movement among the horses. Descending from the hill, they began their descent cautiously, building momentum as they reached the level ground. A breathtaking sight unfolded before me—the herd galloping in unison, a kaleidoscope of coat colors, with an exceptional looking buckskin stallion pushing the herd from behind.

reverie

In this peaceful moment, a herd of gentled Oregon mustangs graciously joined me as I sat quietly in their pasture. Their approach was unhurried, creating a protective circle around me. I was enveloped by the gentle touch of a mustang's whiskers against my shoulder, accompanied by the soothing sounds of their tranquil breathing. The scent of warm sunshine combined with the earthy fragrance of sagebrush provided a break from the everyday hustle.
