On Saltwater, Sunsets, and Shared Laughter

This August, I hosted a two-day beach photography workshop that turned out to be one of the most fun weekends I’ve had with a camera. We had a great group of participants, plus four models — Katie, Eva, Deirdra, and Jenna — who brought their horses (and plenty of personality) to the shore.

The highlight came at sunset. Deirdra wore a silk dress that spilled over her horse as they moved through the light, and Eva rode bareback with her bow and arrow in full stride down the sand. Watching it unfold through my lens was unforgettable.

Jenna leaned into vintage style, riding in a 1950s-inspired black bathing suit with oversized sunglasses. The image of her against the waves felt like a frame pulled from another era. Katie cantered her stallion, Drogo, in and out of the surf, wearing my photographer’s halter, the one I use so horses look “naked” in the final photos.

We broke in between for a lunch cooked by Carol from the B&B, which was as welcome as the ocean breeze after a long morning of shooting. And on Sunday, after the workshop wrapped and the participants headed home, I stayed behind to photograph Katie and her husband for their post-wedding portraits on the beach. It was the perfect closing note to a weekend filled with good light, good horses, and plenty of laughter.

This workshop will be happening again in August of 2026 — dates will be announced on October 1st.
